World Cancer Day 2018 – Don’t ignore your screenings
Nottingham City CCG is supporting World Cancer Day which takes place on 4 February. To mark the day people living in Nottingham city are being encouraged not to ignore their invitations to cancer screenings.
Every year about 1,300 people in Nottingham city are diagnosed with cancer, and 620 die from the disease. The most common cancers in the city are lung, breast, prostate and bowel cancer.
The NHS offers screenings for breast cancer, bowel cancer and cervical screenings:
- Women aged 50-70 are invited for breast screenings every three years. Find out more about breast cancer screening.
- All men and women aged 60-74 are invited to give a stool sample every two years to screen for bowel cancer, and a one-off bowel scope screening is being introduced for men and women aged 55. Find out more about bowel cancer screening.
- Women aged between 25 and 49 are invited to have a smear test every three years. Women aged 50 to 64 will be invited to a smear test every five years. Find out more about cervical screening (smear test).
Screening is the best way to find cancer early, before there are any symptoms, when it is more easily treated and chances of survival are higher.
If you have received an invitation from your GP, please contact your practice to arrange an appointment for your screening.
