Self-care

A well-stocked and secure medicine cabinet will help you treat many common illnesses.  Colds, coughs, indigestion and many other minor complaints can all be treated with medicines available over the counter.  Always follow the instructions on the medicine label, and consult your doctor if the illness continues or becomes more severe.

A typical secure medicine cabinet at home should include:

  • Paracetamol and Aspirin (not to be given to children under 16 or those with asthma)
  • Children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen liquid/syrups
  • Mild laxatives and rehydration mixture
  • Indigestion remedy
  • Travel sickness tablet
  • Tweezers and sharp scissors
  • A thermometer
  • A range of bandages, plasters, non-absorbent cotton wool, elastic bandages and dressings
