City’s First Evening & Weekend GP Service Makes ‘Good’ Progress
GP+ Nottingham City, the evening and weekend GP service operated by Nottingham City GP Alliance (NCGPA), has been recognised as a ‘good’ service following its first ever inspection by the Care Quality Commission.
The service opened in April 2018 and is accessible to all patients registered at a GP Practice in the city.
During the inspection, which took place in February 2019, the service was examined on five key categories. In the category ‘extent to which the services are responsive to patients’ needs’ the highest possible rating of ‘outstanding’ was awarded.
Other areas in which the service was assessed included whether the service was ‘safe’, ‘effective’, ‘caring’ and ‘well-led.’ In each of these four measures the service was awarded the second highest rating of ‘good’.
The inspectors wrote up their findings in a report, which was then issued to NCGPA in April. In it, the outstanding work of the ‘Stub It!’ stop smoking scheme was recognised. This is a scheme that was implemented at the GP+ service, in September 2018, to address the lack of stop smoking assistance services in the city. The report highlighted that just six months after its launch, 54% of participants on the ‘Stub It!’ scheme had successfully quit smoking.
The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care providers in England and conducts periodic inspections of GP Surgeries across the country.
To justify the rating they awarded, comments from the CQC inspectors included:
“Services were tailored to meet the needs of individual patients. The service had identified areas where there were gaps in provision locally and had taken steps to address them.”
Feedback from GP Practices in the city was very positive in the report:
“95% of practices felt the arrival of the service had impacted positively on their own practice.”
Emma Bravery, the Chief Operating Officer at NCGPA, commented:
“The board of directors and staff at NCGPA are delighted with the recent CQC rating of ‘good’ given that GP+ is a new, evolving service. We were especially pleased with being recognised as ‘outstanding’ in the ‘responsive’ domain, and by the amazing comments fed back to the CQC from patients attending the service. As the service continues to evolve, we will continue to strive to achieve ‘outstanding’ overall.”
Dr Nohaid Ilyas, GP & Clinical Lead at the GP+ service, commented:
"The CQC report is proof of what I believe is an exceptional team. When one considers that this service was the very first of its kind in the country and also the speed with which the service was increased to full capacity and how the service provision was adapted to the changing needs of our patient population and to meet gaps in the local clinical services, the report is a testament to the excellence of the administrative and clinical staff."
The GP+ service is Nottingham’s first ever single site evening and weekend GP service. Patients from city practices can access appointments with GPs, Nurses, Clinical Pharmacists, Physiotherapists and Smoking Cessation Advisors at the service.
This was the first inspection of the service since NCGPA registered with CQC, as the provider of the service, in January 2018. NCGPA are also caretaker providers at Southglade Medical Practice in Bestwood (since April 2018) and Bilborough Medical Centre (since April 2019).
